Severe Weather

In the event of life-threatening weather procedures, such as a tornado, a TORNADO WARNING will be issued via radio/TV and the City Defense Warning System (a 3-minute steady blast of sirens).

TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS IMMEDIATELY:

  • Make sure a radio or TV is tuned to a local station for weather information  (Please refrain from using the telephones. Circuit lines must remain open for emergency purposes.)
  • Leave all exterior rooms and close the doors. Move away from any  area  exposed to exterior glass. (If you are trapped in an outside room, take cover under a desk or table.)
  • Proceed to a center corridor hallway or stairwell and protect yourself by putting your head as close to your lap as possible. If the stairwell is crowded, move down to a lower level.

Tornado Watch – By definition, a tornado watch is an alert by the National Weather Service indicating weather conditions are favorable for tornadoes and other dangerous weather to form.

  • Be aware of quickly changing weather conditions.
  • Be prepared to move quickly to a protective area, if the warning signal is given.


Tornado Warning – By definition, a tornado warning is an alert by the National Weather Service confirming a tornado has been indicated by radar or has been spotted.

  • Stay Calm.
  • Move away from the perimeter of the building and exterior glass.
    • Close the door to exterior offices.
    • If you are trapped in an outside office – seek protection under a desk as far away from the glass as possible.
    • Go to a center corridor or stairwell.
    • Sit down and protect yourself by putting your head as close to your lap as possible, or kneel protecting your head.
